What is Grabbit?
Grabbit is a student-run food system that provides equitable on-campus access to quality groceries. Our concept includes an in-person grocery co-op and a Grabbit app.
Project by Jasmine Xu and Amy Zhu
How does it work?
Grabbit is run by a collective of the institution staff, representative student board, and student staff.
Funding is sourced from the institution’s organizations and nonprofit organizations.
Grabbit forms partnerships with local businesses and farms to ensure that the produce is fresh and affordable.
Through the Burrow, which is the physical grocery co-op, students have access to those groceries.

The grabbit app
Onboarding
Grabbit runs on its own currency system that’s converted from your meal swipes or credit card, and it uses an adjusted-payment model to ensure that students can buy groceries at a price that they can afford. After a student inputs their student ID, Grabbit will send a request to the college’s financial department for their information. However, the student can still use the rest of the app while they wait to hear back.
Browse the burrow inventory
View which items are available at the Burrow.
Save items you frequently view!
Make a request
The Burrow is constantly updating their inventory based on student requests, which students can post on the app!
Navigate to the first tab of the Burrow page to see and make requests.
If certain requested items are really popular, then Grabbit will work on fulfilling your request and bringing it to the Burrow.
When the item is available at the Burrow, all users will be notified.
Grabbit Card
Easily reload funds into your Grabbit Card with your meal swipes or directly from your credit or debit card. The Grabbit credit conversion depends on an individual student’s financial status.

Home Feed
Grabbit is more than just its physical grocery store, it also wants to engage students with food in other ways.
The first thing you see when you open the app is the home feed, where Grabbit posts a variety of food content that students interact with.

What’s next for Grabbit?
When we tested, a major question we asked was about interest regarding the social media aspect. Grabbit strives to build community around food and works to destigmatize food insecurity and we want to make sure there is enough interest in the expansion of the social media feature. Our community feed and request features act as beta testing for how students might use and interact with a fully personal social feed. Our potential goal is to have students be able to create their own food-related interest groups and form their own little communities.
